About Hope Farm

If you are looking for romantic places to stay in York, you must check out Hope Farm Guesthouse, an historic homestead in York, Western Australia.  The current custodians and your hosts are Mike and Jo Bryant. Mike was born in WA and Jo is from Wimbledon in England.  Mike brought Jo to WA in 2010 and they moved to York in 2016 to enjoy the fabulous and friendly lifestyle the Avon Valley has to offer and to live in a fabulous house that is Hope Farm.

Hope Farm is an incredible property with a story to tell. It was built in 1880 for Dr. J.W Hope and his bride, Miss Helena Aurora Monger and it is rare you can stay in a place in Western Australia with so much history!

From 1874 Dr J W Hope was appointed as medical officer to the new Swan River colony and positioned in the new town of York.  At York he also undertook successful pastoral enterprises and organised gold prospecting parties, which were also largely successful.

In 1882 he was appointed Medical Officer to the Fremantle Gaol and to the Convict Establishment at Rottnest, Lunatic Asylum, Port Doctor and Medical Officer to the Town of Fremantle. He was involved with the foundation of Fremantle Public Hospital. In 1902 he was elected President of the British Medical Association (Western Australian Branch).

Dr Hope had many military interests and attained the rank of Surgeon-Major.

In 1911 the Medical Health Department was formed and he became the State’s first Commissioner of Public Health. After resigning from the Public Health Department in 1915, he joined the Red Cross Society in England to help the war effort. He was posted to a base hospital in Boulogne (France), where he died of epidemic influenza a week before the Armistice was declared in November 1918.

We know little about Helena Aurora, except that her family were affluent Sandalwood merchants in York and donated the 200 acres property to the couple as a wedding gift.  Dr Hope and Helena were part of the ‘in’ crowd and attended many functions in Perth including ones with Premier Forest and his wife.

The story of Helena and Dr Hope makes Hope Farm Guesthouse pne of the more romantic places to stay in York.

The guesthouse is located 3 kms from York High Street in the heart of the equine precinct. Hope Farm has its own vineyard which grows grapes for local wineries and guests are encouraged to walk and picnic within the vines.  Historic photos adorn the walls of the comfortable guest lounge.

Hope Farm has a well-appointed three-bedroom guest wing built in 1907.  The self-contained annex is fully renovated and has its own dining and living areas with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioners and heating in each bedroom.  We provide a wonderful farmhouse breakfast and can meet most dietary restrictions.

Say hello to Carter the horse, the nine breakfast-egg-producing chickens, Ducky McDuckface and the energetic chihuahuas.  Perhaps you might even bring your own well behaved dog as we are open to welcoming quiet dogs ( pls discuss before arrival).   Bird-life and local fauna abounds and you can spend hours watching and listening to the sounds of nature while reading a book under the shady Carob trees – romantic and relaxing.

A well appointed games cupboard and extensive book library means you may never need to leave.

We look forward to welcoming you soon.
